The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) has announced a two-week delay of the deadline for employers to submit their 2016 “Summary of Work Related Injuries and Illnesses.” The deadline previously was December 1, 2017, but has been extended until December 15, 2017. The requirement to submit this data is a result of a new rule issued during the Obama administration and will be a first for employers.
The December 15, 2017, deadline applies to establishments with 250 or more employees at any time during the previous calendar year that are required to record OSHA illness and injury records, as well as to establishments with 20-249 employees at any time during the previous calendar year that are part of certain industries. The summary required to be submitted by employers should include: 1) the number of injury cases; 2) the total number of days away and days transferred/restricted; and 3) the total number of injuries and illnesses by broad category (injuries, skin disorders, respiratory conditions, poisonings, hearing loss, and all other illnesses). The new rule’s requirement of a more detailed “Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses” for the previous calendar year will not go into effect until July 1, 2018.
