Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business
Since 2002, Phelps has been recognized for excellence in the legal industry. We’re listed as a leading law firm in the nation, as well as in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business. Chambers USA research includes thousands of in-depth interviews with clients and lawyers. A team of researchers conduct extensive research over a period of six months. Law firms and individual lawyers are ranked based on technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial astuteness, diligence, commitment and other qualities most valued by the client.
The Best Lawyers in America®
Each year, Best Lawyers compiles lists of outstanding lawyers through exhaustive peer-review surveys, in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their peers. Phelps lawyers have been named among "The Best Lawyers in America®" since the early 1990s. The number of firm lawyers who are recognized continues to grow each year, with 210 making the 2026 list.
Phelps lawyers consistently rank among Best Lawyers' "Lawyer of the Year," which recognizes lawyers in high-profile focus areas in large legal communities. Those named "Lawyers of the Year" receive particularly high ratings in Best Lawyers' surveys by earning respect among their peers for their abilities, professionalism and integrity. Only one lawyer in each legal field and location is honored as the "Lawyer of the Year."
U.S. News & World Report Best Law Firms
Phelps has been routinely recognized as a top tier firm among Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” rankings since its inception. To compile their national-scale review, U.S. News & World Report asks major clients and leading lawyers to rate the law firms they consider best in their practice area. Fifteen of Phelps’ U.S. offices made the 2026 “Best Law Firms” list. Seventeen of our practice areas ranked among the highest tiers nationally. In the metropolitan rankings, we achieved top-tier distinction in 130 practice areas, with 226 recognized practice areas total.
BTI Brand Elite, Client Services All-Star
BTI Consulting Group has ranked Phelps among the top recommended law firms by corporate counsel. A strategic market research provider for law firms and professional services firms, BTI Consulting Group makes its recommendations based on interviews with more than 600 leading legal decision makers at the world’s largest companies with $1 billion or more in revenue. BTI’s Brand Elite only contains law firms with key factors that clients rely on to select, consider and hire a certain firm. These factors include innovation, accomplishments in client service, bet-the-company work, tech savviness and competitive strength. The firm also has had lawyers named BTI “Client Service All-Stars” for their superior client focus, innovative thought leadership, business understanding, legal skills, value and results.
Benchmark Litigation
Phelps has been listed as a “Highly Recommended” firm in Louisiana by Benchmark Litigation. The publication conducts research on litigation across the country. The results are the culmination of a six-month research period that includes in-depth interviews between researchers and litigators and their clients. Benchmark examines recent casework handled by the firms and asks sources to offer their professional opinions on litigators who practice in their state or national practice areas.
A Best Place to Work
Several of Phelps’ offices have been named a “Best Place to Work” in their communities. This honor is based on surveys about the workplace, such as the quality of total compensation packages, employee benefits, firm activities, employee tenure and retention, and team and manager effectiveness.
Super Lawyers
Phelps lawyers in 16 of the firm's U.S. offices have been recognized by Super Lawyers for achieving a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Only 5% of nominated lawyers in each state make the Super Lawyers list. Super Lawyers ranks lawyers from more than 70 practice areas and weighs them on 12 different factors. Then their peers vote for them based on their professional achievements.
