Phelps Dunbar Expands Life Sciences Practice with Addition of Fenita Morris-Shepard

RALEIGH, N.C. – Fenita Morris-Shepard has joined Phelps Dunbar as counsel; she brings robust experience as an in-house attorney, including six years as in-house counsel at a North Carolina-based health care diagnostics and contract research organization company.

“Fenita’s experience as in-house counsel will be invaluable to the firm," Kevin O’Brien, Managing Partner of Phelps’ Raleigh office said. “Having spent a significant portion of her career in-house at various Fortune 500 companies, Fenita has a well-developed sense for providing operationally valuable legal services and deliverables and managing litigation efficiently. She is also a dynamic litigator with unique, broad-based experience in the health care industry."


Ms. Morris-Shepard has extensive experience in the health care industry. At Phelps, Ms. Morris-Shepard intends to put her diverse background to work in health care oriented litigation, professional liability cases, and in labor and employment matters set in various industries.

Beyond her experience in the health care arena, Ms. Morris-Shepard worked as an assistant general counsel and human resources executive for one the country’s largest commercial banks. She was also a litigation attorney in a well-regarded Raleigh trial boutique law firm, and served as General Counsel of the North Carolina Education Lottery. In addition, she represented the United States of America in a wide-range of civil litigation matters, with an emphasis on employment discrimination cases, as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of North Carolina. She is a state-certified mediator and teaches for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.

Ms. Morris-Shepard received her J.D. from North Carolina Central University in 1992 and her B.S. from University of Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1985.
