Devin L. Honbarger assists clients with a broad range of litigation matters in North Carolina and South Carolina. He defends individuals and businesses in tort actions and other civil disputes.
His practice spans all phases of litigation. He evaluates claims, assesses risk, and develops strategies tailored to each case. His day-to-day work includes factual investigations, discovery, motion practice, depositions, mediation and trial preparation. He works closely with clients, insurance professionals and defense teams to address issues as they arise throughout the life of a case.
Before entering private practice, Devin served as an officer in the U.S. Army. That experience reinforced his ability to evaluate complex situations, communicate clearly, and provide practical guidance to clients facing challenging legal issues.
Experience
- Won a dismissal of a suit for an insurance broker at the opening of a bench trial in a breach-of-contract and fraud case.
- Argued and won an early motion to dismiss securing early dismissal of six-figure claim, including claims for attorney’s fees and bad faith damages in a first‑party property case.
- Successfully defended a six-figure pre-suit demand for professional negligence against an engineer who designed the fire suppression system for a government-owned building that was declared a total loss after a fire.
- Secured a voluntary dismissal for a siding and insulation subcontractor in a residential construction defect case.
- Obtained an arbitration dismissal and settlement of construction defect claims brought by an international airport authority in excess of $30 million for 2% of the demand for an engineer who designed the taxiway for the project.
- Reduced exposure to 9% of demand for an auto dealership network for breach of contract, breach of warranty, and unfair and deceptive trade practices claims.
- Won a favorable ruling in federal court on an aviation defendant’s motion for judgment on the pleadings eliminating most of the plaintiff’s claims for damages and forcing the plaintiff into a favorable settlement.
- Negotiated a favorable settlement of a trespass to real property and stormwater drainage dispute where the property owner was not required to pay any money, and the plaintiff agreed to correct the issues on his own.
